Washing hands is one of the most important things you can do to prevent food-borne illness.

Step 1

Make sure the water is warm (above 100 F*).

Rinse your hands first with water and apply soap to your hands.

Step 2

Scrub your hands thoroughly for 20 seconds

Make sure to get underneath the nails (by scraping them against the palm) and up on the wrists

Step 3

Rinse off your hands and dry with a paper towel

Use the paper towel to turn off the water and then dispose of it in the nearest trash receptacle
